Step 6 of 7
Telling the Time
Thai divides the day into periods when counting hours. Includes a 24-hour chart.
Dividing the day into periods
In everyday conversation, the way you say the time changes with the period of the day. Once you know the numbers, start by learning these divisions.
| Period | How to say it | Number to use |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 AM | ตี (dtii) + number | As is |
| 6–11 AM | Number + โมงเช้า (moong cháao) | As is |
| Noon | เที่ยง (thîang) | — |
| 1–3 PM | บ่าย (bàai) + number + โมง | Hour − 12 |
| 4–6 PM | Number + โมงเย็น (moong yen) | Hour − 12 |
| 7–11 PM | Number + ทุ่ม (thûm) | Hour − 18 |
| Midnight | เที่ยงคืน (thîang-khʉʉn) | — |
For half past, add ครึ่ง (khrʉ̂ng) at the end. For minutes, use a number + นาทีminute (naa-thii). To ask the time, say กี่โมงแล้วwhat time is it?.
Enter a time in the search box (for example, 19:15) to see how to say it right away.
